Nestled in the middle of the urban oasis that makes up the West Point Grey neighbourhood in Vancouver, BC, this single family dwelling and its accompanying laneway house at the rear serves as the principal residence and guest house, respectively, for a young growing family that desired a house that has a modern, contemporary aesthetic and one in which they can entertain friends and family for many years to come.
The C-House's West Coast contemporariness is characterized by its large overhangs, expansive Kolbe Vistaluxe windows and modular aluminum composite metal (ACM) panels juxtaposed to the warm cedar siding. With fascias faced with dark sheet metal and soffits outfitted with clear-stained cedar planks, the distinct C-shaped overhang provides the walls, patios and windows with just the right amount of protection from the elements in our Vancouver climate.
Stepping in through the front door and into the living room, you get a brief sense that you never even entered the house at all as the massive Kolbe VistaLuxe floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room (and similarly in the master bedroom above) act like an ever-changing canvas painting that shows off the distinctive four seasons of Vancouver. Then at the rear of the house, the 12ft wide folding window, floating inches above the kitchen counter, and the 10ft wide folding door set in the adjacent family room allows the action to spill out onto the rear deck where infrared heaters installed in the soffits will keep its guests warm until the wee hours of the night.

This craftsman-styled urban home tucked away in the quiet neighbourhood of North Burnaby, BC, Canada came about as a result of the clients not wanting something that most folks in this and many other Vancouver suburbs were constructing – big box spec. homes. The clients had a very specific program in mind but with a limited budget, a fairly stringent zoning by-law and a big-box spec home (their current home at the time) to compete with, the challenge was on to design their custom dream home!
One of the initial requests early on was the homeowners' desire to have the Master Bedroom on the main floor which would help for aging-in-place. The accompanying master ensuite achieves a spa-like retreat that is filled with natural light from the double skylight above in the vaulted ceiling. The floor level of the living spaces towards the rear conforms to the contours of the lot as you drop a couple of steps from the front of the house to the back resulting in an airy 10-foot ceiling for the kitchen, family room and dining room providing an increasing sense of openness in the spaces.
An auxiliary study centre with a built-in desk and shelving hangs out in the upper floor vestibule. From there, the children could break out into their respective rooms, the eldest being rewarded with the master-like bedroom complete with a walk-in closet and 3-piece ensuite. Another request was to provide space in their children’s bedrooms where they could sit and look out the window while reading their favourite books. So naturally, we incorporated bay windows to each of the bedrooms to help serve two functions; 1. to open up the bedroom walls to give that feeling of a larger room and 2. to provide alcove-like spaces for the kids to immerse themselves in their favourite books.
